Top Tips to Look Radiant on Your Wedding Day!

I can’t stress how important it is to look after your skin, if you look good on the outside, you will feel it on the inside and vice versa! But where do you start?!

There is literally so much information out there it gets confusing, especially when celebrity trends take over; jajoba oil, acai berries, juices, super-foods (always only available from random shops you have never heard of!), raspberry extract, microdermabrasion, diamond peels, salicylic acid...the list is endless!!

Well Ladies (and Gents!) you will be happy to hear this blog isn’t trying to jump on the ‘celeb trend’ bandwagon, we’re going back to basics, by the end of this article you will know how to treat your skin in order to get that desired glow! But it won’t break the bank and you won’t have to be treated like a Guiney Pig in a salon to achieve it!

One of my favourite makeup artists Bobbi Brown defines ‘Pretty Radiance’ perfectly: “Women who are Pretty Radiant instantly light up a room with their positive energy. Radiance isn’t only something you see, but you feel it immediately. These dynamic women have the natural ability to make people laugh, open up, and relax- without even trying. Women who are radiant are happy at their core. The eat well and exercise, and they don’t hold on to negative thoughts”.

Every woman wants to be 'Pretty Radiant' on their special day, so here are my top tips on how to get that glow…

Water, water, and more water…

Water helps clear the toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes. It also assists in transporting nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, and preventing dehydration, which can cause premature aging. It can even make skin appear fuller since the hyaluronic acid that naturally exists in skin will pull in and hold the water for a wrinkle-plumping effect! I recommend at least 8 glasses of water each day (large ones!) and more if you're active or live in a warm climate. Plain water too boring for you? Try adding a little flavour with skin-soothing tea like chamomile or mint. Remember, it doesn’t have to be flat water, fizzy water carries the same benefits however you may find bloating an issue if you drink too much.

The X Factor…

I know what you are thinking…you've heard it a million times! But wearing sunscreen is the single easiest way to look younger for life. Ninety percent of wrinkles are from sun exposure, it’s so much easier to prevent the damage than it is to fix it afterwards! That means no slacking during winter months either, when rays are just as strong and can reflect easily. Look for a formula that offers broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA rays (the ones that cause premature aging) and UVB rays (one of the main causes of skin cancer). I currently use a Dermalogica skin care range, which is SPF 30.

Scrub your brushes…

A British study found that 72% of women never wash their brushes or sponges, even though they collect dirt and bacteria, which can cause breakouts. "You should wash loose powder brushes every two to three weeks, and those used to apply foundation once a week," says Jessica Wu, an LA-based dermatologist and author of Feed Your Face. Mix a couple of drops of gentle facial cleanser or shampoo and lukewarm water in a cup, swish your brushes around, rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and lay flat to air dry.

Go nuts…

Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which increases skin elasticity and may decrease skin cancer, according to recent studies. Throw in walnuts—which are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids—to lower inflammation and put the brakes on breakouts, says Molly Morgan, Board Certified Sports Specialist Dietitian and author of The Skinny Rules. Finally, add some macadamias. "They're full of high quality oils and fatty acids that aid in skin repair and rejuvenation" says integrative practitioner Isaac Eliaz. Aim for a handful of each daily to reap their pore-perfecting benefits.

Don’t neglect your neck and chest…

Most of us are guilty of stopping our skincare routine as soon as we hit our chin and our neglected neck and chest take vengeance by wrinkling, sagging, and displaying dark spots that beg to be hidden! The skin on these areas is thinner, and doesn't have a strong blood supply, so it doesn't heal well. Plus it's an area that we often forget to protect with sun cream. Use the same products as you would on your face, chances are you have a beautiful wedding gown that shows off your neck line so pamper it and get it matching your face!

Take it off…

I am forever shouting at my younger sister for this, she comes in from a night out and sleeps in her makeup! I don’t know how she does it! After a night out I can’t wait to scrub my face paint off! Sometimes I even keep makeup remover in the car…I just can’t get it off quick enough! If you are getting your skin prepped for your big day or event then make sure you are getting every last scrap of tat off. Leaving makeup and dirt on skin doesn't just clog pores; it can cause excessive dryness and even skin dandruff. “Most makeup contains a sugar-type molecule that can grow yeast overnight”, says Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine. Don't forget to thoroughly remove eye makeup too. "It can lead to bumpy rashes around the eyes or small white bumps called milia cysts," Sound gross right! So ladies if you invest in something this week, let it be a good makeup remover! I use Garnier Miceller Cleansing Water and it is brilliant, just pop a small bit on a cotton pad and sweep across the face in an upward motion. It leaves my skin feeling perfectly fresh and even gets rid of stubborn waterproof mascara and lip stains!

Take cool showers…

A steamy shower may feel great, but it's one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Not only does the heat strip essential oils, it creates a mild burn. Blood vessels respond by dilating in an effort to cool the skin, causing flushing and ruddiness. "When you're in your twenties, you can take a hot shower, be red & swollen and recover in an hour, but in your thirties, it may take 2 hours," says Alexiades-Armenakas. "By your forties, your skin just doesn't have the ability to shrink back to its original state so you stay ruddy all the time." So take a cool shower! I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I’m sure you can manage it for a few weeks before your big day.

I carried a watermelon…

Adding a lycopene-rich food, such as this juicy pink treat, "helps reduce damage and redness caused from sun exposure, prevents future wrinkling and possibly even lowers skin cancer risk," says Elizabeth Somer, nutritionist and author of Eat Your Way to Sexy. Aim for one cup each day by tossing it in salads, salsas, and smoothies. Or try her recipe for refreshing ice cubes: Purée watermelon, sweeten with concentrated apple juice, pour into an ice tray, and freeze. Then add cubes to water (fizzy or still) for a refreshing, skin-saving mocktail.

Get your goggles on…

As if you need another reason to buy a new pair of sunglasses, turns out they provide more protection against under-eye wrinkling and aging than sunscreen. While your eyes are equipped to handle sunlight, the area around them is comprised of the thinnest skin, where most of the signs of aging area. Every time you squint from bright light, you're creating lines from that repeat movement. To keep the wrinkles away, choose a pair of polarized glasses that's wide enough to fully cover the eye area. My choice of glasses are always Ray Ban Aviators, I have the huge ‘cigarette’ style that completely cover my eye area!

Eat your greens…

Move over, oranges…just half a cup of raw broccoli is loaded with 65 percent of your daily vitamin C! Research shows that vitamin C-rich foods not only mop up the free radicals that cause wrinkles and sagging, but can help remove the DNA damage they form. While you're reaping the wound-healing and skin-protecting benefits of eating more vitamin C, try smoothing some on your skin as well. In one study, women who treated sun-damaged skin with a vitamin C cream for six months saw significant improvement in fine lines and discoloration. The Body Shop does a great vitamin C cream and it’s very affordable too!

Now I do know how hard it is for the modern woman to eat well on the go! Why not do what I do and order it straight to the office. Manchester based company; City Salads will deliver wonderful super-food salads of your choice straight to your desk! And take it from me, they are delicious and keep you going for the whole day! So there’s no snack excuses!

Create your own spa at home…

Why spend hundreds at the salon when you can treat yourself at home! I don’t know about you but I love a good pampering night, get rid of your other half and convert the living room, bedroom or bathroom into a ‘you haven’ for the evening! I like to light my Joe Malone candles and listen to quiet background music to get me in the mood! Then the serious pampering begins! A powerful (cheap!) anti-aging potion is lurking right in your fridge. Raspberries are loaded with Ellagic acid, an antioxidant that research shows can prevent wrinkles when applied to the skin. It protects the collagen that keeps skin plump and beautiful from being worn down by the sun. Add in honey, a natural humectant that holds water against the skin for maximum moisture, and you've got a recipe for gorgeous, dewy skin. Mash up a handful of raspberries with a spoonful of honey, and apply the mask to clean skin and chill out for 15-20 minutes, rinse, pat dry, and add your usual moisturiser and eye cream. My choice is Dermalogica ‘active moist’ and ‘total eye care’ for an ultimate spa like treatment.

No time to make your own? My secret weapon is the Essential Cleansing Mask by ESPA! This mask is perfect for all skin types and comes in a rich mineral clay formula. The mask penetatrates deep into the skin with its antiseptic rose geranium ingredient which helps to clear excess oils, impurities and congestion...it really is a god send!

Get out…

If you are sat at a desk daily like me, you will know the common issues…leg ache, backache, bum ache, wrist ache…the list goes on! Oh and to top it all off with the worst thing for your skin ever...AIR CONDITIONING! If you work in a hot, busy office, it’s tempting to want to sit next to a fan or underneath an air-con unit but honestly there is nothing worse for your skin, especially as you will have makeup on. Pores get blocked, face gets shiny and it just all gets a bit sweaty! Try and sit next to a window that you can open for fresh air, or if that’s not possible take a stroll outside every few hours (smokers are allowed a break so you should be entitled to a skin breather break, right?)! Get the blood flowing and take a brisk walk when you get home from work, go for a swim, jog or yoga. It will release natural endorphins and really get you looking fresh and healthy. I know whenever I have the dreaded ‘writers block’ I get out for a jog or if the weathers nice I go on a quick bike ride! There’s nothing better to get the brain working, whilst obviously toning up.

Get your freak on…

Presuming you aren’t waiting until your wedding day, you need to get your freak on in the bedroom! An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? Wrong, says Dr.Gloria G.Bramer, a Georgia-based licensed clinical sexologist. According to her, an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away (apples are fine too, but I think everyone would prefer the latter!), she says: “An orgasm is one of the healthiest things you can give yourself each day”. From a sexologist’s point of view it should be treated as part of your daily skincare routine! After all, it will give your skin a heavenly glow; Bramer says that having sex improves blood circulation, which helps to pump oxygen to your skin and make it brighter. It also helps to eliminate toxins and can actually make your lips a little fuller! So, what are you waiting for!

Get those Zzzzzz (after the above)…

Last but not least, it is so important to get quality sleep. I once read that any sleep after midnight is not ‘beauty sleep’ and I completely agree. If I go to sleep past midnight I always wake feeling drowsy and have those irritating bags under my eyes! Now as a socialite and self confessed party girl myself I can’t guarantee sleep over the weekend but I do try and get a full 7-9 hours Monday to Friday, that way I know I can allow myself that late Saturday night! But I will tell you now, if I was prepping for my wedding I think every Saturday night a month before the big day would be cancelled! We are all different and you know in yourself how many hours you need to function the next day, so it’s all personal preference, but I do suggest 7-9 hours.

So there you have it Ladies and Gentlemen, my top tips for looking radiant on your Wedding Day! It’s all up to you now to abide by the rules, and it’s not a strict regime, you can alter it to suit you and your lifestyle! Just remember you don’t need to be going out and copying a certain celeb to get her skin…at the end of the day she’s probably been paid to say she uses that certain method or product! So don’t be fooled! It’s all easy if you just go with what feels right, natural and makes you happy. Because if you treat yourself right, it will most certainly shine through on your big day.

For a glowing effect on a night out or big event I always abide by Bobbi Browns make-up rules:

Skin

You still want to have glowing skin for the night, but you’ll want a little more coverage. If you use a tinted moisturising balm during the day, at night try switching to a light-to medium-coverage foundation for a more polished finish.

Cheeks

To add radiance to your face, try a pop of something brighter or bolder. Stick with the same formulas you use for day but amp up the colour. A brighter pink for pair skin, or cranberry or plumb for darker skin, gives you and extra glow.

Eyes

For women with darker skin, go with a gold and burnished colours and a thicker line of black liner. For women with fairer skin, experiment with a smokier eye than usual, adding a bit more depth with a skin tone shimmer on the lower lid and a darker shade in the crease. Bump up the mascara with an extra coat or two.

Lips

Add a little more power to your lips with a formula one shade stronger for night. For a modern, luminous lip, try a red gloss.

Hair

A subtle yet still feminine change for a night works best for Pretty Radiant women. Try finger waves for soft cascading curls, get an elegant blowout, or put your hair up in a beautiful upsweep.

“I love being with women who are Pretty Radiant because they shine, and they are the people you want around all the time” Bobbi Brown.
