Inspired Wedding Flower Design - By Appointment Only

I recently had the pleasure to meet an incredibly gifted event stylist and Floral Designer, Javier Salvador of By Appointment Only Design. His flower designs are exquisite and it is no surprise to hear that he has been hailed as the U.K.’s answer to Preston Bailey!

Do you have a signature style?

We are known for our abundant floral designs and use little foliage so that the focus is firmly on the flowers themselves. We love to use domes of lovely blooms, and take our inspiration from many things, especially couture, high fashion and interiors but we always try to push the boundaries to create something new and original for each of our clients.

What’s hot at the moment?

At the moment classic and vintage inspired looks are very hot. If you don’t necessarily want a purely vintage look, ideas can be kept fresh by adding your own spin. Another key look at the moment are all white weddings.  Masses of pure white blooms are used, without greenery to create maximum impact.

What are your favourite blooms for spring/summer?

I love many flowers, including Hydrangeas, roses, cattleya orchids and hypericum berries. When we receive our orders of flowers, we are like little kids at Christmas, each time there is something new and exciting. In my latest delivery I received roses like watermelons!

Do you have a favourite wedding ?

Every wedding is special to us but one of our favorite weddings took place just outside Paris. They were fantastic clients to work with and gave us an open brief. We travelled with three articulated lorries full of props, flowers, linen and glassware! The Chateau was a blank canvas, and it was part of our job to fill it with beautiful things throughout the four days of celebrations. Each day the venue was transformed with a different look and theme, ranging from a Moroccan inspired feel with hundreds of scented roses to a contemporary mix of Perspex and rose-heads and an enchanted forest filled with trees and cascades of exotic orchids.

What advice would you give to brides when choosing their wedding flowers and where should they start to create their ‘look’?

Look for ideas in magazines and browse the internet.  As well as wedding magazines, interiors magazines can also give you ideas of how to choose your colour palette.

All florists need to know where to start, what type of venue they are working with and what your budget is.  If you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve than your florist can work with your budget and help you to achieve the desired effect by prioritizing and dividing your budget between table-centres, bouquets, pedestal arrangements, props etc.

You can now get virtually any flower that you want at any time of year, but if you are keeping your eye on your budget, it is best to work with seasonal flowers.
