Transform Your Look from Day to Night: Hazaar of London

Earlier in the year we brought you images of the latest designer wedding dresses for 2013, straight from the London catwalks. As part of the series, we introduced hot new label Hazaar of London, whose innovative 'adaptable' dresses really caught our attention.

Founded by London based design duo Isoline Hickman and Rachel Farrimond, Hazaar of London offers a unique take on bridal fashion, with dresses which allow brides to change their look on their wedding day without the need for a second dress.

We spoke to Isoline and Rachel to find out more about this innovative label and the ladies behind the striking designs.

Please tell us a bit about yourselves – how did you get into bridal design?

We first met at the London College of Fashion where we were studying costume design for the performing arts. It was there that we discovered our mutual love of all things bridal wear and decided that we wanted to start creating classic bridal designs with a contemporary twist.

What is the inspiration behind the label?

We wanted to design bridal wear that was unique, yet classic. We were inspired to design an adaptable collection when we were bridesmaids at a friend’s wedding. The longer part of the dress got messy in the evening and it became restrictive when she wanted to let her hair down, so she ended up changing into another dress. We thought ‘why don’t we just design an adaptable dress?’ and that’s where it started.
We want our brides to enjoy wearing their dream dress for as long as possible on their wedding day, without having to change into a second dress.

Where does the name come from?

We love the word ‘Hazaar’; it is a celebratory word that is used when something has gone well, or to toast an occasion. We added ‘Of London’ because we are London-based, a British label and met in London at the London College of Fashion, so it seemed appropriate.

You are a design duo – how do you work together and do you always agree on the designs?!

We really enjoy working together and always seem to be in each other’s heads following the same thought process. We also have a very similar design style and both adore bygone eras and vintage glamour.

When it comes to agreeing on designs we get very excitable, as we both have lots of ideas and inspiration. We really love this process and can happily tweak and change elements of all of the designs for hours to create a collection that ends up being very much ours.

What has been your best selling dress?

There are a few dresses that seem to be the most popular from our current collection, and all of them are very different. ‘Lavinia’ is a romantic satin and tulle princess style dress with bust pleating detail, ‘Silvia’ is a simple 60s inspired A-Line with delicate lace overlay detail and ‘Helena’ is an elegant simple strapless satin and chiffon mermaid style dress.

How much do current fashion trends translate into your bridal collections?

Sometimes if we think a trend will work for a bridal design then we might touch on it, but we find that influence for our collections comes more from historical eras, as we adore vintage grace and elegance and like to design collections that are timeless.

Who is the Hazaar bride?

The Hazaar bride is an individual who is unrestricted and creative and wants to be able to look perfect on her special day, without compromise.

What a nifty idea! I like the idea of having a different look for my reception, but think I will want to wear my wedding dress as long as possible. This seems like a great solution!
